[Discuss] Unexplained GUI lockups



Sometimes I was able to Cntl-Alt-Insert (if I remember right) or to
switch to a console (non-X) and login, and kill X and the 'world would
restart' (X is restarted automatically with the appropriate gui).

But at times it gets so hosed up, the only thing I can do is power off
(hold the power button for 4sec or more) the hard way.  But doing that
just grates at my UNIX soul (because it sounds so much like 'fixing
M$Windows' methodology so many 'techs' use).
