 From what I have heard the last mile of POTS is cut once you go to FIOS 
and you can not switch back.  The TP in your unit will now plug into the 
new box they are installing.  They are so excited to have people switch 
to FIOS because your choices are limited after the switch; you can use 
Verizon or Comcast, either way you will not have POTS.  Also, since the 
last mile is no longer copper but fiber you will lose the phone when you 
loose power.  I personally don't see either as a big deal, I haven't 
even had a home phone in over five years, but some people do.
