Laptop recommendation

   HP Compaq nx7400

   You'll want to add RAM, but otherwise it might suit you. The Intel
   graphics chip eats system RAM but has completely open source X
   drivers.

I'd really prefer 1600x1200 to 1680x1050 (I'd take 1920x1200) -- the
widescreen form factor is usually less convenient for working with
photographs than the 4x3 form factor (when you subtract title bars,
the KDE thing at the bottom of the screen, and all that it's probably
another 100 pixels or so lost).  The other problem with shared RAM is
that it hurts overall system performance, due to the graphics stealing
cycles.

I'm actually using an nVidia board on my C840, with the free driver.
