Did you try installing the NVidia driver from their site?
wget

sudo sh ~/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run -n -a 
Let it edit your xorg.conf
X should be good when you kick off startx
To check for 3d:
glxinfo | grep direct

If this all fails, you tried VESA and of FB?
