(Apparently, my original e-mail didn't make it, resending...)

SuSE 9.1 Personal was installed on a Compaq Presario 5900Z desktop
this evening. Unfortunately, I am unable to get a graphical login
for the user, and advised that they purchase a copy of Windows XP
Home and I would gladly install that.

Specifically, it does not like the monitor, a TRL/RIC DH-1764.I
changed the resolution from the default to 1024x768 (this was after
installation and before first login), then when it switched to the X
Server to test the video:

Open APM Failed (dev/apm_bios) No such device. No devices detected.

Upon bootup and entering YaST after a text login, it displays a box
indicating:

Monitor (0) with ID: ___FFFF not found. Please set up monitor
manually.

The person also had two additional Compaq-branded monitors, neither
of which are listed as supported Compaq monitors in the monitor
listing under Compaq.

SuSE initially defaulted the monitor to VESA 1280x1024, however when
the config with that setting was saved, the X Server brought up the
same error as above (Open APM failed).

I am not exactly sure why the above is occurring, since the same
TRL/RIC monitor model worked perfectly on a generic home-built system
with 8.2 and 9.0 previously. Since the system is a Compaq, could
something inside it be overriding something else so that correct
monitor information is not being sent to YaST?FWIW, the video card
is an S3 Savage 4.
