Floppies becoming obsolete

Not sure if I agree with Gates' timeline, but for many years I have
thought that solid state memory technologies would replace mechanical
devices. I have not analyzed the cost per byte, but USB drives are
running about $40.00 retail for 256MB, which is 15 cents per megabyte.
The real advantage of these devices is that they all plug into a
relatively common external port. We may see USB being replaced by some
newer technology, but these devices are much better than floppies, but
they do have some drawbacks. Another technology is CF (or similar
technologies). 

But, the real advantage of a CD or DVD is that permanent data may be
stored and distributed very inexpensively. But, I still think that
readonly solid state media might replace CD or DVD, and even hard
drives.
