[Discuss] Setting up a home cloud

I've found the WD MyCloud to be a good option. A couple caveats:

1. It's essentially a stripped-down debian system with some proprietary
software that continuously scans for music, photo, and video media to
index, and generates thumbnails and other metadata. Those processes can bog
down the system and make it perform poorly at times.

On my units, I ssh'ed into the NAS and disabled the proprietary WD daemons.
For indexing, I did an apt-get update to enable apt, then installed mlocate
and set up a daily cron job to run "locate /nfs/Public/" and dump the
results into a text file in /nfs/Public, and I do media and metadata
indexing separately on my home web server, where I load it all into
psotgresql.

2. Sudden power loss can cause problems. One of my units got partially
hosed after my house lost power. I was able to get it working again after
ssh'ing into it and experimenting a while, but my long-term fix was to put
the units on a UPS so they won't suffer power outages in the future.
