This is the right insight, I think.  Even if they are, for all
practical intents and purposes, completely irrelevant, they never
really will be entirely, because of the celebrity factor.  What they
say will carry weight, even if they are not involved.  But that's
exactly why they should not be asses--it doesn't just make them look
bad, it makes everyone involved look bad by association.
