I can get a Dell Precision M6500 with a first gen quad core i7, 8 GB
(and expandability to 32 GB), a 1920x1200 screen, and 2 SATA bays, an
mSATA slot, and an optical drive that could be replaced by a
third/fourth SATA drive, for around $400. Big and heavy, but built
like a tank, and it's easy to service. It's on about 23 hours/day and
never gives me any grief.

I haven't looked at pricing for low end used laptops, though.
