The difference is, the software most of us rely on is open source, and
is known to have been inspected by some very smart 3rd parties who
have their own incentives to make sure it's as good as the authors say it
is.  The process is far less transparent with the disk manufacturers.
For all you know, they're actually using ROT13 (no not really, but you
get my point).

We're talking about people who essentially redefined the terms to
measure the amount of storage they provide in their products, to suit
their own priorities... =8^)
