If access.cnn.com is the VPN server then "access.cnn.com" is its host name. 
It is not a subdomain. Therefore you will not see it listed as a subdomain 
and nothing you do will change that.

As for why you don't see it listed in the cnn.com zone? Properly configured 
name servers prohibit zone transfers except between designated slaves. 
That's not an error or a mistake. It's by design.
