[Discuss] How can I resume from S1 (STR) mode in Ubuntu?

If there is a power button of the momentary contact type, you might be able to wakeup the server by pressing it briefly.

No guarantees, though, as the server may immediately power off, or wake up and then power off.

Why would this server be configured to enter a sleep state if there is no means to awaken it?

Before trying the power button, I'd put another computer on the same network segment and run Avahi. Even if the NIC says it doesn't support WOL, it is worth a try.
