hmm, i have an earlier eee and it just works. it's unlikely, but it 
could be a hardware failure.

maybe install another unix or version of ubuntu or the same version of 
ubuntu on an sd card or usb drive and try to boot to that. it will at 
least tell you that it's definitely software [or not].
