Compensation: $80K - $90K plus we have a comprehensive benefits program

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

 

The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining the
systems, software, and services for O'Reilly Media, Inc.. This includes,
but is not limited to, creating, optimizing, and securing the servers and
networks.  Additional tasks include installing/configuring new hardware,
system performance tuning and general maintenance (logs, backups, etc.).
The SSA is also responsible for monitoring the systems and services and
planning for upgrades and future expansion. This position is located in
Cambridge, MA. and will report to the Manager, Systems Administration.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

 

*         Install, maintain and repair system hardware

*         Install, maintain, configure and upgrade Operating System and
application engine software

*         Document system and application engine configurations 

*         Monitor system, application, and network
performance/availability

*         Plan for system, network and software upgrades to satisfy
projected growth and new projects

*         Execute on implementation and execution of project plans

*         Monitor and respond to customer problems reported via email and
support ticket system

*         Establish and recommend policies on system use and services

*         Actively recommend improvements to company infrastructure

*         Keep apprised on new developments in the hybrid cloud solutions

*         Carry a pager on rotation with other Systems Administrators and
provide one hour or less response time

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

*	Expert knowledge of one operating system (Linux/UNIX) and working
knowledge of a second operating system (MS Windows).
*	Expert knowledge of at least one SQL database (MySQL/PostgreSQL).
*	Advanced knowledge of at least one programming language (such as
BASH,Perl,Python,Ruby) and fundamental knowledge of web processing/design
and software development
*	Advanced knowledge of Internet technologies like TCP/IP, DNS and
HTTP
*	Working knowledge of network topology and security.
*	Ability to organize multiple tasks and priorities for personal and
project time management with little supervision
*	Ability to solve technical and system issues with little to no
supervision
*	Excellent oral communication skills and good writing skills

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

*	Bachelor (4-year) degree, with a technical major, such as
engineering or computer science or equivalent work experience
*	4+ years experience in a Unix Systems Administrator role
*	Experience with High Availability Service Clustering
