Ahh.  So the compromise happened via somebody's compromised shell access to
the machine/machines, because they've been running git over ssh apparently.
Isn't that how github works?

Whenever and wherever you use git, what protocol are you running over?  (I
could and should go read more and get into git more, but it hasn't been
desired in any of the places I work, so I'm not very experienced or familiar
with the details of git.)
