did that, and found
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313
          802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev

i downloaded the recommended tar file from broadcom and
tried installing it, but got bogged down in all the missing
details, so ...

jerry suggested that ubuntu 10.10 should work out of the box,
and indeed it did after i stumbled through a problem of my
own making. when i first tried the installation, i got a
messge/problem if had seen before, and had never solved:

     gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

going to ubuntu forums i found numerous references to this
problem and several proposed solutions, namely:

     chmod 755 /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.system
     chmod 1777 /tmp
fsck -fy /dev/sda1 (when not mounted)

none of these helped at all. i finally discoverd that the
problem was due to the fact that i had kept /home/moylan
intact and there was stuff in there that was upsetting
gconf. i reinstalled using jdm as the basic user instead of
moylan and the problem went away. oh, well.

thanks for the help (as usual).
