No sound, but no error might indicate a problem with one of the levels.
You might need to try several different mixers before you find one that
shows all the levels and mute options supported by your hardware.

I've ran into some cases that I could only resolve with the console
alsamixer and not through mixers running under X.

Have you tried the ALSA Upgrade Script covered in one of the steps above?

I used it with success for about a year until Ubuntu started packaging a
new enough version to support my laptop's hardware.

The key to finding the answer to audio problems is making your searches
very hardware specific. Specify your motherboard model number, your
audio chipset family name and model, etc. This increases your chances
that the suggested solutions will be applicable to your situation.

For example, one report for my laptop said to add:
options snd-hda-intel model=<my laptop model>

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. Something that wasn't covered by any
of the generic troubleshooting guides.
