Entire file system goes read-only

I had this a couple years ago on rhel/centos.  For me, it was caused by
failing hardware.  I forget if it was the disk, controller, cpu,
motherboard, or what.  I forget precisely how we diagnosed it, but most
likely, I would have reformatted the system and/or swapped parts back and
forth with its neighbor.

(These systems were a bunch of identical compute clones in a farm.)
