suggestion for linux mail server

Are you talking about a mailer daemon like sendmail/postfix/exim, an imap
server like cyrus/dovecot or both?

I tend to prefer postfix myself for a mailer daemon.

For an IMAP service, dovecot does very well for a simple system where
every user has a shell account on the system. If you want a hosted
solution where users don't have direct user accounts on the system, Cyrus
does very well.
