 I worked on a few TWAIN drivers under Windows a few years back.... 

Are you scanning in 24 bit color or 8 bit gray scale? 

8.5 X 11 inch paper at 2400/in resolution works out to something like this: 

8.5 * 11 * 2400 * 2400 = ~ 514M is you use 8 bit gray scale, and 2G if you 
use 24 bit color (which is really 32 bits wide because it is common to use 
the upper 8 bits for a meta channel.) 

So, you'll need about 3G to scan 8.5x11 paper at 2400 dpi, but using 8bit 
gray scale may work for you now.
