since you mention Googles Android don't forget Nokia just released their Symbian OS and s60 browser as open software.

Openmoko runs Linux and is available now. Slight catch--which is the 
point--the Openmoko software is very rough at the moment. Expect Apple 
to always have a smoother product than Openmoko, but expect Openmoko to 
have some major advantages for the techie market. 

Actually, Openmoko is *not* currently available, they sold out, the web 
site says later this month. I forget the price. More than the 
subsidized Iphone price, less than the un-subsidized Iphone price. 

And then there is Google's phone software. It might be quite slick. 
Google has money to throw at such a thing and Google is actually a 
hotbed of innovation. 

And, because both of these projects are open, they can cross-pollinate. 

My wife has a phone from work and so can't justify getting an Iphone, so 
she thinks I should. She thinks Apple products are cool. But I don't 
want one. Not yet.

(slow) ppp connection to the internet for his Linux notebook.
