Well, I hate to be blunt, but *duh*. I agree with you. The things I'm
pointing out are what make it difficult to get to Square One with the system:
plugging my two name-brand monitors into the two jacks on the back of a
name-brand Intel motherboard and just Expecting It To Work. If I, as a
16-year veteran, can't get it to work--how about Joe Consumer? (Recall that
Consumer Reports published a Linux advocate's letter last month, with
essentially the same conclusion about Walmart-volume viability.)

Item #4 in my openSUSE 11.0 saga:

4)
Sound card doesn't come up at all. I get an obscure error for which Google
can't even find a resolution:

Jul 12 11:27:55 fourcore kernel: snd_als4000: disagrees about version of
symbol snd_pcm_new

(along with numerous others). At boot time the ALSA modprobe gets a
azx_get_response timeout.

---
Do I really need to rebuild the kernel just to be able to listen to my music?
