Ah, ok. I just tweaked away with synclient, then dumped out its current 
values, transcribed into xorg.conf, disabled xshm and bounced X and was 
pretty much done with it.

Okay, so its a combination of the hardware and the software. My main 
point was that the very same Steve-approved trackpad hardware which 
works swimmingly under Mac OS X doesn't behave nearly as well under 
Linux.

Wait, you have a circular trackpad? Perhaps the square is part of why I 
don't like it -- I do rather like circular scrolling on the iPod, where 
there's an actual circle... :)
