not really.   mutt is run and messages saved in 
/home/moylan/msg/2008 on one machine and /home/mem/msg/2008 
on the other.  permissions are 0755 on both systems in all 
directories in the chain. 

touch foo shows up as 0644 on both machines in ~/msg/2008. 
messages in moylan are saved as 0644 and in mem as 0600. 
i can't imagine what is causing the difference.
