Modems

A friend of mine asked me to recommend a modem for his mother's
Linux machine. I think she is running Ubuntu. I don't know what she has
as a platform, so I don't know what is built-in. Assuming she has no
built-in modem chip, does anyone have a recommended Linux-friendly
external modem. I would tend to chose one from Zoom since they are
still in business and manufacturing in the US. Apparently, a modem is
her only choice. I have asked my friend for some additional information
about the PC.
