t41 wireless

i've so far been unable to get the built-in wireless card to
work on my new (used) ibm t41, running ubuntu gutsy. the
built in wired eth0 works fine.

lshw -C network shows the wireless card as being wifi0 using
driver ath-pci. lsmod shows ath-pci is installed.

though lshw claims that wifi0 is the wireless device,
iwconfig says it isn't.

iwlist wifi0 scan gives an error, whereas iwlist ath0 scan
shows all the neighborhood nodes.

so i configured ath0 as follows:

  iwconfig ath0 essid moylan-net key s:(passwd) ap 00:09:5B:23:8A:26
  ifconfig ath0 192.168.0.6 broadcast 192.168.0.255 up
  route add default gw 192.168.0.1

iwconfig shows:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wifi0 no wireless extensions.
irda0 no wireless extensions.

ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"moylan-net" Nickname:""
          Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: 00:09:5B:23:8A:26
          Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power:14 dBm Sensitivity=1/1
          Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
Link Quality=0/70 Signal level=-96 dBm Noise level=-96 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:306293 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

(this signal level is spooky, because iwlist scan shows it at -39dBm.)

ifconfig shows:
ath0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:05:4E:46:3B:76
          inet addr:192.168.0.6 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

          RX bytes:152661 (149.0 KB) TX bytes:152661 (149.0 KB)

and route shows:

192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 ath0
default netgear.localdo 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 ath0

still, something's missing. any suggestions are welcome.

btw, i fiddled ad nauseum with the ubuntu network gui and
got nowhere.
