 Current Linux Magazine has article on PowerTOP software, to configure 
a laptop or other power-scaling system to not burn CPU needlessly. 

Using an old laptop with power scaling as the one "always on" server 
is an alternative to using the opensource router. 
Is a MacMini as power efficient as it looks?
