I figured out how to find why MythTV sound wasn't working.

On occasion, I would try to watch a recording on MythTV and there would
be no sound. Rebooting would fix it, but I ain't no Windows user, so I
wanted to find out the smallest thing I could do to diagnose and fix the
problem.

My first guess was that some program was holding open some /dev file. A
little poking around with the output of lsof (list open files) showed
firefox had /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p opened up twice.
/me shakes fist in fury

After killing firefox, sound worked again in MythTV.
