well, ok -- the line in menu.lst that you altered at the 
installfest read originally (iirc): 

  kernel  /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=933880c9-962e-490e-966a -f2914fb1a5f5 ro splash=silent 

and after your change: 

  kernel  /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=933880c9-962e-490e-966a -f2914fb1a5f5 ro verbose noapci 

this apparently solved my problem, which was an excessively 
long boot time, like 5 minutes or so, which was reduced to 
about 2 min after your mod. 

then in subsequent discussion, you and other folk suggested 
that it should be noacpi, not noapci.  interesting -- so i 
then changed the line to read noacpi and the boot time 
remained at 2 min.  puzzled, i then removed the term 
entirely, and boot time remained at 2 min.  going back to 
splash, quiet splash, or splash=silent at the end, the boot 
time reverted to 5 min. 

i used to know where the splash file was kept, but can't 
find it now on either my wife's or my machine, where the 
line ends in quiet splash and has no problem.  could the 
splash file be missing on my wife's machine?
