Re: gratuitous use of echo?



 I understand you wanting to keep the code "clean", but echo is a   
shell internal and doesn't actually spawn any processes.  When you   
pipe from echo, you are doing exactly what you say you want to do:   
taking the contents of a file and dumping them to awk - and this does   
NOT spawn a process.  "echo $var" is simply how you tell the shell to   
perform this operation.
