Actually, that's exactly what the druid does.  If you set an opening 
balance for an account all it does is create a transaction between the 
new account and "Equity:Opening Balances".  If you decide to delay 
that process then yes, all you need to do is manually enter that 
same transaction that the druid would have done for you.
