A woman I know, when she enrolled her children in the Boston Public
Schools, refused to sign on to the school's "student code of conduct"
because it forbade children from bringing "anything that could be used
as a weapon" to school. After all, she said, you could put someone's
eye out with a pen. You could strangle someone with pantyhose. The
only way to follow this rule would be to show up at school stark naked.
