I have two made by Macally
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817146604), USB
2.0 and Firewire. Mostly metal, tough. Some users report having
trouble putting them together, but I think they are not dexterous--line
up the slot and it slides. The screws that hold it shut go into
plastic, so it is a bad choice for frequent opening and closing. Also,
though it is cheap ($35), it isn't nearly-free. The Firewire costs
something. Tough housing isn't free either.

I bought one, year or so later bought a second. Satisfied customer.
