Opening remote files (gnome apps) [was: a way to check your ISP]

So, I've got to be doing something wrong.... how do gnome applications
(e.g. evince) handle URLs -- meaning opening a remote resource
directly? I know GIMP can open an image file over HTTP, but it seems
like most of the gnome applications I use don't. Meanwhile, I
typically use a lot of KDE applications (e.g. kview) which just
understand how to speak http to open a file. This is not a troll or
flamebait, just wondering since I don't use gnome by default if I'm
missing something.

I'm running Debian Etch with evince 0.4.0

Thanks
