So standard network troubleshooting applies:

 $ host www.google.com
www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com.
www.l.google.com has address 72.14.205.99
www.l.google.com has address 72.14.205.103
www.l.google.com has address 72.14.205.104
www.l.google.com has address 72.14.205.147

I can ping all those addresses. What does your DNS say and can you
ping the addresses returned?

 $ telnet www.google.com 80
Trying 72.14.205.99...
Connected to www.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
HEAD / HTTP/1.0

HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Cache-Control: private
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1
Set-Cookie: PREF=ID=1bde89120f49d18b:TM=1195666062:LM=1195666062:S=SV_jixqWKMb1MRov; expires=Fri, 20-Nov-2009 17:27:42 GMT; path=/; domain=.google.com
Server: gws
Content-Length: 0
Date: Wed, 21 Nov 2007 17:27:42 GMT
Connection: Close

Connection closed by foreign host.

The 'HEAD / HTTP/1.0' is the part I entered; follow it with two carriage
returns.

Did you get any closer?
