It's safe to assume that for any mass-market x86 system, someone 
has got Linux to run on it and the basic hardware will be 
supported. 

If you need a specific version or distribution of Linux, you may 
be out of luck for the particular hardware you have. (I'm 
thinking of things like "I must run a 2.2 kernel but I also need 
support for an NVidia built-in ethernet NIC".)
