That's not what it's like at my house -- it's twisted-pair from 
the pole to my house.  Now, I DO believe that it's fiber or coax 
at the pole, and power comes from the pole, not the CO.  But it's 
certainly POTS from the pole all the way to my phone.

Maybe the plant varies city by city?
