For RCN it's only twisted pair to the NIU mounted on your wall.  It's coax from 
there to the local optical node and then fiber back to the CO.  The network is 
powered via street power on the poles with battery backup in the beige boxes 
bolted to the poles every few blocks. 

At least that was the case when I worked there ~7 years ago.  I don't believe 
their plant has changed that much.
