A quick comment on cost.

When I buy desktop machines for the office, my current
configuration looks like this:

CASE: (+29.00) Broadway 72-4HL-S ATX 420W Mid-Tower Case
MB: (+65.00) ASUS M2V-MX AM2/VIAK8M890/DDR2/PCIE/AVL/mATX
CPU: (+ 89.00) ** ATHLON64 4200+ DUAL CORE AM2 SKT940 **
Retail BOX CPU, W/3 YEAR MFG WARRANTY
MEMORY: (+ 50.00) Crucial 1GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 Memory
HDD1: (+ 85.50) Seagate ST3320620AS 320GB SATA2 7200rpm 16MB
Hard Drive
HDD2: (+ 85.50) Seagate ST3320620AS 320GB SATA2 7200rpm 16MB
Hard Drive
CD-ROM1: (+48.00) SAMSUNG 16X Dual DVD+-RW Drive W/SF
VGA: (+48.00)** ATI/SAPP Radeon 9250 AGP 128MB W/TVout
KEYBOARD:(+ 6.00) AOPEN KB-858 white 107 KEYS PS2 KEYBOARD
MOUSE: (+14.00) Logitech OPTICAL Wheel PS2 Mouse
WARRANTY:(+0.00) No Charge on 1 Year Parts Warranty
ASSEMBLY:(+15.00) Assembly All Parts, Test System

That's $535 plus shipping. Call it $600 total.

Add XP Pro and Office Basic and it comes to $850.

That's almost a 50% premium for a Windows system over a Linux
system. And XP Pro doesn't even know how to do RAID-1, so we do
a basic install on one drive and then copy it over to the other
one as a get-back-on-your-feet measure.

Not to mention that Microsoft apparently feels that they have
the right to install software on your system anytime they feel
like it without notifying you or giving you a chance to stop it.
