What I'm really asking is, what did you do besides download enough
libraries and include files so that configure and make went through
without errors?

I don't really see any instructions there for doing anything besides
installing libraries and include files. Except for the ffmpeg mess.
But if you didn't do anything about that either...

When you say configuration web page, do you mean
<http://wiki.videolan.org/Contrib_Status>? Or are we still talking
about <http://wiki.videolan.org/UnixCompile>?

I found that running "make" caught a couple of things that ./configure
missed.

Scott> Yes, there were several files installed, but in the end, it

You mean you could build without errors? Or that after loading
something mentioned in the web page that didn't produce a configure or
make error, you got a build that didn't crash, whereas before, you got
an apparently successful build that did crash?

    Scott> Hope that helps...???

Well not yet, but I believe you may well know something I don't; you
just haven't yet told me what it is so that I can act on it.

Thanks for the help. Actually, your initial message was the most
helpful thing I've hit yet in trying to use the upstairs card
downstairs.
