random system freeze

hi all. i'm experiencing seemingly random system lockups. i get no
response from the keyboard or mouse. <cntl><alt><backspace> OR <delete>
do nothing. <Alt><SysRq><just about everything on the keyboard here
including smashing my forehead on it> also do nothing. i end up doing a
hard reset. i have a "mp-bios bug 8254 timer not connected" upon boot
but this may not be important. see previous thread
http://lists.blu.org/pipermail/discuss/2007-May/053776.html

i had the problem with fc6 (gnome) and now have it with f7 (kde). it
seems to be more frequent with f7. i was hoping the upgrade would solve
the issue.

what log files should i be digging in to find the key to my problem?
thanks for any suggestions. - eric c.
