Gmail's superior spam filtering wouldn't help him.  If /everyone else/ had
gmail, that might help, since they wouldn't get the forged messages in the
first place.  But having a Gmail source address wouldn't fundamentally
change anything about his problem, which is that /other/ people are getting
spam that appears to be from him:
