After encountering additional problem with mdadm on reboot today, I
checked the Ubuntu bug tracker and found a bug that addressed both my
current symptoms (hanging on boot) and the symptoms I originally
reported in this thread.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/feisty/+source/mdadm/+bug/75681

So apparently it is a known problem.
