Ubuntu fonts

I am running versions of Debian Sarge and Ubuntu Edgy on the same computer.
Why are the fonts on Debian Sarge much better than on Ubuntu? I notice a
little difference in the fonts on the screen but there is a dramatic
difference on the print when using Firefox to print Slashdot. Both machines
use fontconfig and are set for 'sans' font size 10 monochrome. I think that
I have the cups printer driver set up the same on both versions. I am using
a Brother MFC-7820N. Could it be that the Brother drivers are not yet up to
speed with Edgy?
