mod_auth_pam



that didn't do it...

I think its something to do with shadow.name lookup in NIS and the 
/etc/nsswitch.conf file.
I've been doing a little googling of the error message Im getting in the 
messages file and
they all seem to point to misconfigured nsswitche file
