Sudo Problems

I installed Sudo on my gentoo server and when I attempt to use it, I get an
error.

rob ~ $ sudo su

sudo: can't open /etc/sudoers: Permission denied

rob ~ $ sendmail: Cannot open mail:25

I have sudo installed on my gentoo laptop and do not have this problem. Any
ideas?
