At the bootloader, edit the command line to add the option

init=/bin/sh

When it boots, mount your root read/write

mount -o remount,rw /dev/whatever

change the root password

passwd

and reboot cleanly.

Now you know the root password. You may want to install sudo and
enable sudo access for your user account now...
