Open Office and Microsoft Office Files

We had a short discussion last night after the meeting with regard to
OpenOffice.org not being able to write MS Office files (eg. when doing a
save-as).
AFAIK, OpenOffice.org has been able to read and write Word documents, Excel
spreadsheets, Power Point Presentations and even drawing files.

The problem as I see it is one where when reading an old Star Office
document (.sdw) and wanting to same a MS Word document, when you click on
the filter pulldown, the cursor would be on StarWriter, and the element to
write Microsoft Word documents would be above it, and you would need to
scroll up. The gentleman who I talked to had OpenOffice.org from Fedora
Core 4, which should definitely have the capability to write Microsoft
Word .doc files since this feature has been in OpenOffice since OO.o was
taken from StarOffice. While I don't know exactly what version is in Core
4, it should be OO.o 2.0, and should have an entry for Word 97/2000, Word
95, and Word 6.0.
