cups admin problem with Ubuntu

Have you tried using gnome-cups-manager?  I think that's what the
"manage printers" menu option has.  I did what you're trying to do
without any password type problems.

I admit I'm pretty sloppy about using the root password.  I generally
have a window in "sudo -i" mode, the way on my debian system I have
one in "su -" mode.
