I didn't see any match for dot1q in the 2960 settings, and no reference
to either that or to 802.1q in the pdf manuals.

Today I reset the switch to its factory settings, then did a sanity
to verify that all ports work fine when I plug in just a pair of
laptops. That worked.

Next, I plugged it back into the 3500 switch, and it didn't work.

Following that, I reconfigured the 3500's port to use access mode
instead of trunk mode, and the 2960 worked fine that way.

But if I understand correctly, I'm limited to the one VLAN with these
settings; I can add machines to vlan4 through the new switch, but not
to vlan1, vlan2, vlan8, or vlan12 which the 3500 also uses.

Here's the altered setting for the 3500's port 18:

I'm not sure what to try next, but I don't want to put anything on this
switch until I have it clustered with the 3500.

No progress on the smtp timeouts, either; I never had a chance to
look at that today.
